Physical Education Subject Principles
How we teach P.E at East Coker?
At East Coker School we follow the National Curriculum for Physical Education.
To support with delivering this, we follow a 2-year rolling programme which has been designed to give a broad and balanced curriculum as well as many opportunities to develop knowledge and skills. The activities have been chosen carefully to ensure they allow the opportunity for children to develop Motor Competence, Rules, Strategies and Tactics and Healthy Participation.
To support with delivering these skills and knowledge we follow a progression of skills adapted to meet the needs of our pupils. The skills progression is used across the rolling programme to ensure skills are developed across the wide range of activities on offer.
Within early years, children aim to achieve the Early Learning Goals utilising sessions developed by Get Set 4 PE, which focus on Fundamental movement skills. In KS1 we have a high focus on Fundamental Movement skills and children developing knowledge of how, why and when these skills are required. As children progress into KS2 more sports specific activities are offered to develop children’s tactical and decision-making skills. Across all year groups, children develop their knowledge of healthy participation which is included in their P.E sessions.
Physical Education is led by a teacher and supported by a sports coach who both have expertise in sport and physical activity. The sports coach supports teaching staff across the school to deliver high quality PE through regular discussions and in class support.
How we teach Swimming at East Coker?
We offer 10 weeks of swimming lessons to children in years 2, 3 & 4. These take place at Goldenstones Leisure Centre, Yeovil and we are supported by two qualified swim teachers during these sessions. We follow the ASA School Swimming programme which gives all children an opportunity to achieve at a level appropriate to them.
We aim for, as a minimum, children to reach the national curriculum requirements, which are:
To swim 25m
Tread water for 30secs
Perform safe self-rescue
If children have not achieved these requirements in year 4, they are offered booster swimming sessions in year 5 and/or 6 as necessary to give children the best opportunities to achieve the minimum standard. As part of the swimming curriculum, swim safety are developed through classroom sessions and assemblies.
Wider Opportunities
At East Coker, we offer a wide range of PE and Sporting activities outside of the usual curriculum lessons. We have a close relationship with Yeovil Town Community Sports Club who deliver a range of opportunities through the Primary Stars programme. We also encourage children to remain active through the offer of various sporting activities and fixtures through our membership with the Yeovil School Games Association and SASP. Please visit the Sport at East Coker page of this website for further details.
We also run after school clubs in a variety of sports. A full list of clubs is available here.
