How Do We Teach French At East Coker School?
At East Coker School we follow the National Curriculum for Languages and teach languages from Year 3 to Year 6. We mainly teach French as that is a language on offer at most secondary school Modern Foreign Language departments.
We believe in ensuring the curriculum is ambitious, and that it will inspire and excite our pupils through delivering a wide variety of topics and themes. Lessons are practical and engaging and content is based on familiar routines that pupils can relate to in their everyday lives. There is a focus on developing a bank of key vocabulary to use in conversation and writing. Pupils are taught the sounds of the French alphabet to help them read words in French.
To support with the delivery of French, we use Salut as well as other resources, for years 3-6. Our French lessons incorporate a wide range of learning activities, such as songs, rhymes, interactive games, word matching, role play and stories. These activities ensure that pupils are consistently and actively engaged in their learning, building confidence in their ability to speak and write French as they progress through the school. This will enable pupils to use and apply their learning in a variety of contexts, laying down solid foundations for future language learning.
