Art & Design Subject Principles
How Do We Teach Art & Design At East Coker School?
At East Coker School we follow the National Curriculum for Art and Design. To support with delivering the knowledge based curriculum we use Access Art and adapt these to meet the needs of our pupils.
Art and Design is led by a teacher and strongly supported by an HLTA who has an expertise in art. The HLTA supports staff across the school in delivering high quality art through regular CPD and discussions. Our CPD is supported through Access Art and Spaeda.
The school prioritises the following areas:
Drawing
Painting
Sculpture
We also incorporate a rolling programme of textiles, printing and mixed media across the curriculum. While we mostly focus on a knowledge based curriculum, there is also a clear progression of skills. In addition to this we have a repeated programme of learning to ensure children's knowledge is constantly built upon and developed. This includes a strong focus on children’s individual art journey in their sketchbooks and a sound understanding of key vocabulary.
Wider Opportunities
We provide opportunities to develop art knowledge and skills beyond the normal curriculum. We engage in a range of art projects including workshops with Perrott Hill independent school and we participate in the Od Arts Festival which takes place every other year in East Coker village. We believe in diversity and equality and have engaged in art projects and artist Q&A workshops around these themes. For example, the artwork below is currently on show at the 44AD Gallery in Bath for the ‘Windrush’ event.
