Music
Music Subject Principles
How Do We Teach Music At East Coker School?
At East Coker School we follow the National Curriculum for Music and to support with the delivery of music we use a programme called Charanga.
Music is led by a teacher or a HLTA with the support of the class teacher.
The school prioritises the following areas:
- Listening and Appreciating music
- Singing
- Playing instruments
- Composing music
- Improvisation
- Performance
There is a clear progression of knowledge and skills with a 1 year rolling programme which allows children to build on their knowledge and skills year to year. At the beginning and end of each unit (as a minimum) children perform the song(s) they have been working on which helps to build confidence and provides the children with a regular chance to perform.
Wider Opportunities
We provide opportunities to develop musical knowledge and skills beyond the normal curriculum. Each year, we have a KS2 Christmas concert where all the children have the chance to perform songs as well as individual musicians sharing music they have learnt. Our school choir also performs at this event. We have a KS1 Nativity each year when all our children have a role as a member of the chorus, dancer or acting role in the play. Around Christmas time the choir performs within the local community, with past experiences including singing Christmas Carols at local care homes and joining a village sing-a-long. In the spring we have a Spring Concert where every child is given the opportunity to perform something musical based on a theme. By the time children leave us in Year 6 we aim for them to have performed in a number of different concerts, showcasing their knowledge, skills and confidence.
