Religious Education Subject Principles
How Do We Teach Religious Education at East Coker School?
At East Coker School we follow the Religious Education in English Schools: Non-statutory guidance 2010. To support with delivering the subject knowledge in RE we use the Awareness, Mystery and Value Somerset syllabus and adapt this to meet the needs of our pupils.
Religious Education is led by a teacher or a HLTA with the support of the class teacher.
The school prioritises the following areas:
Christianity
Judaism
Hinduism
Islam
Humanism
There is a clear progression of knowledge and skills and we have a repeated programme of learning to ensure that children's knowledge is constantly built upon and developed. This includes a strong focus on children’s questioning skills and a sound understanding of key vocabulary.
Right to Withdraw from Religious Education (RE)
There are many benefits to the teaching of world views within the RE curriculum.
- Respect and Understanding: RE helps children respect others and understand different world views and beliefs.
- Global Awareness: It improves the childrens' knowledge of global affairs and the diversity of other cultures.
- Personal Development: RE supports the development of ethical standards, personal happiness, and well-being.
- Community Building: It helps avoid extremism and religious discrimination, contributing to a more cohesive community.
- Critical Thinking: RE encourages critical thinking and moral discussions.
Parents have the legal right to withdraw their child from all or part of RE lessons. To do this,
please inform the school in writing by sending a letter or email to the school office. This will be followed up with a discussion with the Headteacher.
If you decide to withdraw your child, please note that your child will be supervised during
RE lessons, but we will not provide extra teaching. According to the Church of England guidance, parents may need to make alternative arrangements for RE if it aligns with their own beliefs.
